The Bound Feet
2022, Oil on silk. 94 × 48 in.
This piece is part of the foot binding series. It alludes to the relationship between small feet and marriage. Before foot binding was outlawed in China, women had to have small, crippled feet to be desirable in marriage. Also, there was an old belief that foot binding is good for fertility. On the screen behind the women is a series of patterns and drawings suggesting fertility, family, lineage and marriage. The rabbits, again, are a symbol of lust, and are peeking at her feet.
